The first day to surpass the billion-dollar mark in online spending

"Cyber Monday", the online equivalent to "Black Friday", was the first day in history that online spending broke the billion dollar mark. Not only is this great news for the economy, it's great news for everyone who has an ecommerce website. This being the beginning of the season, it's expected that there will be more billion dollar breaking days for ecommerce spending.

The chart below shows the online spending totals starting November 1st, through Cyber Monday November 29th and the percentage change. In 2009, Cyber Monday spending totals were $887 million compared to this years $1,028 million, a 16% increase. Overall, every week since November 1st, online spending has been up every day.

The next graph illustrates the change in weekly spending. Online spending has was up last year, and from the looks of the graph, this year will be much higher than last year. The numbers are also higher than the numbers from 2007 which was before the recession. This shows that investing in an ecommerce website is well worth it.

It might be too late to start your ecommerce website for this years holiday season, but if the trend continues next year will be better than this year, with many days breaking the billion dollar mark. With aggressive online marketing plans, we may even see more days during the year exceeding the billion dollar mark. So if you're considering starting an ecommerce website, now is the time.
