Email marketing: avoid hitting the spam folder

Written by Joe on Wednesday, January 27, 2010

A big problem with email marketing is your messages ending up in the spam folder or not even being deliverd to the intended recipient.  Even worse, you can end up on black lists for sending out spam.  Once you get on a black list it is very difficult to get off.  Here are a few ways to avoid your emails ending in the spam folder.

  1. Choose a developer and designer that is familiar with W3C standards.  HTML errors in an email are the easiest way to end up in the spam box.
  2. Before you send out your email, validate it.  The W3C has a free validator that can tell you if you have an errors in your code.
  3. Use a delivery monitoring system.  Tracking how many emails bounce, are opened, read and clicked through is invaluable information about the users on your email list.
  4. If you still find your email in the spam box, check your code.  Every ISP and email server can have different filters and spam settings.  So change your code around and see what gets you the best results.
