Google this, facebook that, forget Google & Facebook

Focus on your users and get a website that satisfies them

Too many times before I even get started with a web project, the first question I usually get is how will I get on page 1 of the search engines. What people don't realize is that getting on page 1 of google takes a lot time, patience and hard work. But if you focus on satisfying your users you will be much better off.

Paid advertising & PPC

I've seen companies dump thousands of dollars into pay per click marketing plans. And I guess if you have thousands of dollars to blow, this works, kind of. But if you're like the majority of small business owners, you can't spend that type of money on paid advertising. Even if you can afford to spend that type of money consistently on a month to month basis for at least 6 months, when your advertising budget runs out, your traffic hits the floor. Paid advertising, in my opinion, will never top organic search engine optimization.

Build a website for your customers

I can't stress this enough. The most important aspect of any business is what? Customers. If you're customers aren't happy, they aren't buying, and you aren't making money. When you start a new web project, your focus should be on what your customers are looking for. If you don't know, do some research. Find websites of companies similar to yours and see what they are giving their customers.

If your business is completely unique, which today is very hard to be, you can try a few different methods to get more traffic to your website. Give something away for signing up for a mailing list or write an advice column. Have a poll on your website to get your users opinions. Engaging your users and keeping them interested is the best way to get repeat traffic and get your website shared with that users network.

The bottom line

Keep your users happy. Customer relations, in my opinion, has died over the last 5 years or so. I have worked in the retail industry doing customer service, and I have seen this first hand. The same is true on the web. Most people just want traffic, and don't focus on what's really important, customers.
