Short answer, yes, long answer, it depends

If you're considering investing in a website for your restaurant, you may be considering whether you need a database or not. This can be a tough decision to make if you don't know exactly what advantages and disadvantages a database can offer your website. Here are 3 reasons you might want a database for your restaurant website.

Does your menu ever change?

Very few restaurant menu's stay the same. Of course, your diners favorites will always be on the menu, but sometimes changing things up can move old favorites out and new ones in. In order to get these changes on your website, in most cases a database and content management system make this process much faster and easier to accomplish.

A database offers a localized area for strictly the content of your menu. Without a database, you may have to edit multiple files, which you then have to test and ensure that you entered the content correctly. If you're changing specials or menu items often, you can see where a database would come in handy. Editing and testing many files will take time, and if you're paying to update your website, cost you more money.

Do you want diners to be able to sign up for your mailing list?

Mailing lists are a great way to build relationships with your customers, and to have a mailing list, you need a database. Even if the diners information gets emailed directly to you, you still have to store it somewhere, adding another step of manual work. With a database, you can store as many email addresses as you would like, for long as you would like, and access them whenever you would like.

Do you want to be able to add photo galleries to your website?

After having events, or adding items to your menu, or getting a new sign, you might want to show pictures on your website, and a database gives you the availability to store your photos and add and organize photo galleries. This can be accomplished without a database, but involves manually editing HTML files, and depending how many files the images are used in, you may have to edit many files. A database keeps everything neat and organized, making migrating to a new website a much easier process.

As you can see, technically, your restaurant website doesn't need a database. However, if you want great restaurant website, that you can easily update without having to constantly pay someone to update it for you, a database is the way to go.
