"Having a great website means nothing if the content sucks"

This is something you can usually hear me saying. Your content is what draws visitors to your website. Nothing is worse than a website with poorly written content. Content over stuffed with keywords and grammatical and spelling errors will get you know where on the web.

Your content is a representation of you and your business. Knowing how to optimize your website content is key to a successful website. Here are 5 tips tips for writing and optimizing your website content.

1. Use short paragraphs with headers

Visitors to your website will scan over your content to look for headlines and keywords to see if your website has what they are looking for. Breaking your content up into smaller paragraphs and using headers will help a visitor find what they are looking for.

If a visitor can easily find what they are looking for on you website, they will come back. After a visitor uses your website a few times, they may decide to join your mailing list or subscribe to a paid service. Make it easy for visitors and you'll be rewarded.

2. Use bullet points ad lists

Bullet point and lists make scanning your content as easy as possible for visitors. Bullet points and lists highlight topics or give you an idea what the content is about. They also make reading your content a little more fun, as you're not just reading paragraph after paragraph of plain text.

3. Highlight important words or phrases

Again, when scanning content, highlighted words or phrases will be the first thing your eyes are drawn to when reading. Simple text formatting such as bold and italicized text make a huge difference in emphasizing that the content is important. It is common to highlight your specific keywords for that page using bold text.

4. Include links to your information capturing pages

99% of the time the goal of your business website is to capture leads or sell a product. Linking your content to your product page or contact form is a way to get entice users to contact you or make a purchase. After reading an article that got a visitor thinking about your services, why not tell them to "Contact you now!".

5. Write engaging content

Too many times on the web you see boring keyword stuffed content. It really feels like a marketing pitch when you read an article that repeats "NJ website design" 50 times. Use a human voice. Write as if you are talking to your visitors.

Writing content with a personal feel will give your customers the feeling you want them to have. Showing your own style and personality in your writing will create a much more natural feel and give visitors an idea who you really are.

Just to recap, 5 tips for writing and optimizing your website content are:

  1. Use short paragraphs with headers
  2. Use bullet points ad lists
  3. Highlight important words or phrases
  4. Include links to your information capturing pages
