Interactive web design, it's a Jersey thing
Written by Joe on Wednesday, October 20, 2010
What exactly is an interactive website?
An interactive website is just like it sounds, a website that allows it's users to interact. Interactive elements on a website include mailing list, sharing functions, comments forms, games (like Tetris); pretty much entertainment for users. The opposite of an interactive website is a static website. Static websites are composed of just text and images. There are no ways for a user to interact with the website. In other words, BORING!
Why do you want an interactive website?
That's a good question. Do you want users to return to your website, or just visit 1 time, read your information and never return? Interactive websites give your users something to look forward to and come back for. An interactive website will also be something your users might want to share with friends. This type of sharing is the best type of traffic you can get because it is highly targeted. You're only going to suggest something to a friend if they would be interested in it.
Don't go overboard with interactive elements
Including a few interactive elements on your website is great. But if your interactive elements are interfering with basic website functionality, you're in for trouble. Make sure no only that the interactive elements on your website don't interfere with your website functionality, but that they all work correctly on the popular browsers. Nothing is worse than searching for a web page or having a web page suggested to you just to find out it won't work on your computer. This is why testing is such an important part of the web development process.
So why is interactive web design a Jersey thing?
Have you ever been to New Jersey? Or if you're from New Jersey have you ever visited any other states? The pace in New Jersey is much faster than anywhere I have ever been. That means you can have your website done much faster, in some cases, in as little as just 1 week!
